Triton and Nereid, 1877, tempera on paper mounted on panel,
Oskar Reinhart Foundation, Winterthur.

These are more deities of the water, the ocean in particular. Triton is the great trumpeter of the ocean. He was said to have a great shell for a trumpet. Poseidon, the King of the Mediterranean Sea, and Amphitrite, an ocean nymph, were his parents. The nereids were the nymphs of the sea. There were 50 of them and they were the children of Nereus and Doris, a daughter of Ocean. Ocean was the God and ruler of the whole water surrounding the earth. Nereus was called the old man of the sea and he was said to be a gentle and trustworthy god.
